As to the first issue, Strickland and Alvermann (2004) reviewed the issues concerning the achievement gap in the U. S. and found that literacy demands of the middle grades are exacerbated when the students come from low income and minority homes; in particular, these issues assumed critical levels when the students are members of low-income and minority families. These students are already likely to attend schools characterized by high mobility rates, inadequate resources and facilities, and large numbers of young students with challenging learning needs (Strickland Alvermann, 2004). Comparable trends are also apparent in the State of New Jersey as well. According to Lattimer and Strickland (2004), the results from the Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment (GEPA) from 2000-2002 identified consistent differences in partially proficient, proficient, and advanced proficient between District Factor Groups (DFG’s) and race/ethnicity. However, it is not clear how a simple superposition of waves, resulting in constructive interference, can result in waves of such gargantuan size, which moreover seem to occur not too infrequently. Rogue waves represent a transient ocean phenomenon that usually occurs in the deep interior of the ocean, and plays out on relatively small surface areas in the vast ocean expanse. Though usually associated with storms, sometimes these rogue waves can arise out of nowhere in only mildly agitated ocean waters and disappear just as quickly, usually creating havoc if some ships happen to be traversing in their path. Even huge and robust vessels are known to be no match to the fury of ocean as manifest in rogue waves. Though mariners have always been aware of the 'freak' wave phenomenon, owing to lack of any reliable empirical data, these waves could not be predicted or quantified, and so could not be taken into account during the design process of a ship (Rawson & Tupper, 2001, p. 174) New ships are designed on the basis of previously successful models which have withstood very abnormal conditions, but most vessels that are built even today are simply not designed to weather the assault of a colossal rogue wave. Rogue waves have for long remained the dreaded stuff of legends. Until well into the twentieth century, there was only sparse anecdotal evidence for these towering infernos of the sea, and scientists tended to classify the tales surrounding the monstrous waves as sea mythology that dealt with sea monsters, mermaids and so on. It was generally known that in any wave system, after a long enough time, an exceptionally high wave would occur. Nevertheless statistical models of sea states which have been used to predict the occurrence of extreme waves either concluded that waves over a hundred feet to be either a physical impossibility or as something which could occur only once in a thousand years (Schober, 2004, p.194). However, several instances of hard evidence, improved mathematical theory, and satellite survey data in the more recent times have all now converged to prove the existence of the monstrous waves beyond a tinge of doubt. Nowadays they are acknowledged to be a natural pheno menon of the ocean, just as tsunamis and mega-tsunamis are, though their causes and characteristics are different. The freak waves are no longer regarded as freaks really. Even so, the rogue waves are considered very rare, and rather elusive; improbable but still possible.. Rogue waves are definitely anomalous events in the sense that they fall outside the distribution of wave heights predicted by orthodox wave theory. Yet they are no longer thought of as unexplained quirks of nature, though scientists still very much a lack an adequate understanding of them, especially of their underlying causes. Scientific and mathematical advances in the recent years and decades, however, have led oceanographers to calculate their probability of occurrence, with the help by extensive wave data from buoys, ships and satellites. It is still not possible to predict their exact time of occurrence, though. Mathematical models are now able to predict where they are likely to form in general, although the exact location cannot be pinpointed. The problem with understanding the rogue wave phenomenon is the highly complex non-linear mathematics that underpins it. The occurrence of rogue waves takes place in what is mathematically called a chaotic regime. According to the newly emerging science of chaos, some small perturbation in local conditions could crescendo into a disproportionately huge effect. But rogue waves are gradually becoming more understood. The Benjamin-Feir instability and nonlinear focusing have been proposed as a mechanism for the generation of rouge waves in deep water. Also, certain homoclinic solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation have been observed to exhibit many of the properties of rogue waves in deep water (Schober, 2003, p.735). A deeper understanding of the mechanism by which rogue waves are formed is likely to help us narrow down our predictions about them, and thus save many lives. More extensive studies and investigations into rogue waves are not only essential for a better theoretical understanding of the dynamics of ocean but also to avoid a good deal of the huge losses to life and property that routinely occur in the seas. On average, it is estimated that approximately two large ships sink at sea every week and rogue waves have been the purported cause behind a fair number of these sinkings. Though there may certainly be other causes behind the many mysterious ship losses, scientific analysis of the wrecks of ships sunk in recent decades indicates that a significant proportion of them have a damage pattern that seemed to suggest the hand of monster waves which can swell over a hundred feet. The sinking of many a supertanker in the latter part of the twentieth century has also been associated with rogue waves. In addition, there is some evidence that average wave heights are slowly rising and that freak waves of eighty or ninety feet are becoming more common. This trend is attributed to the intensification of the greenhouse effect which has made storms more frequent and severe. When Genghis Khan was little, his chieftain father poisoned. With no leader left, the tribe abandoned Genghis and his mother. They were left alone for many years to care for themselves. Throughout these years, his family met many hardships such as shortage of food and shortage of money. Though unable to read, Genghis was a very wise man. Perhaps his greatest contribution was a code of laws that he declared. Since Genghis couldn?t read or write, these law were documented by one of his followers. His laws were carried on by people though the many generations to the point of still being in use today. Either as a modification of Genghis?s laws or as Genghis had declared them. Genghis Khan promoted the growth of trade between China and Europe. This allowed him to gain essential supplies such as food, weapons and other essential survival materials. Genghis also invented a system similar to the pony express. It was a system in which the horse and rider could silently communicate, a system that is still in use today. Perhaps the greatest gift ever given by Genghis Khan was the gift of language. Genghis was the first ruler to develop a Mongolian language. Genghis Khan was also a military and strategic genius. He structured his army in a unique and interesting fashion. He integrated soldiers from different tribes into one powerful fighting force. This was a brilliant idea. Not only could he have diversity and people who specialize in certain aspects of warfare, but it also inspired loyalty to the mongolian army as a whole rather than to a specific group of people. Marc Chagall Marc Chagall as an artist and as a person cannot be categorized. He was born in Vitebsk, Russia, learned to paint in St. Petersburg and lived in Paris, Berlin, and the United States. His career is influenced by many different factors. His Hasidic Jewish upbringing reflected in the content of his paintings greatly. The lyrical fairy tales of Jewish mysticism, the stories of the Bible, and the Rabbis and scholars who surrounded him in his childhood come out onto his work. When he went to art school in St. Petersburg it was the period when he became exposed to the avant-garde movement in art. With Leon Bakst he saw the reproductions of Fauve canvases, the sketches of Van Gogh and of Cezzanne his ambition to go to Paris was born. At the time that he moves to Paris for the first time (1910- 1914) Fauvism and Cubism were the prevailing modern art movements. It can be seen in Chagall’s composition the application of these movements principles of arbitrary colour and reorganization of the visual field, but he incorporates these principles with a dream like scape to create his own personal style. The term Surrealism applies to Chagall, that is the term that was coined when Appolinaire when visiting his studio in 1913 murmured â€Å"Supernatural!†. This is not to say that Chagall was part of any Surrealist movement on the contrary he is against any style or movement. It used as a term where the artist has drawn upon consciously or unconsciously from the dream experience. It is clear in his works that he does not want any movement to restrict his expression and mobility. He is wholly against empathetic realism, of the Courbet, Impressionist or Cubist sort, yet he still uses Cubist devices and comes close to Impressionism. Chagall depicts a more dreamlike, story like content filled with symbolism (much of it traditional) in his paintings. He admired Manet, and drew great inspiration from Gauguin in his early years. He creates a style that was more universalistic and one that did not have any idealistic underpinnings. Chagall’s painting The Fiddler (1912) is the largest and richest work in the series of figure pictures in which Chagall was bringing to life the typical characters he remembered from his childhood. In this composition the use of arbitrary colour is clearly seen, for example the fiddler's green face, the blue roof top etc. He does not ... ...his pictures as illogical and non-realist. The images were not of this earth therefore different from things or geometrical figures. Also the way he uses colour is like no one else. In the conversations Chagall makes many references to poetry, but that is not surprising for to him his art is poetry. His concern was never with a movement but with the purpose of bringing to people the love and gaiety of his paintings. Chagall is known to use much more than a canvas as a showcase for his work. He is world famous for stained glass and mosaics from Jerusalem to the United Nations. For him a stained glass â€Å"is a transparent partition between my heart and the heart of the world.† In his paintings we see his childhood and homeland and for Marc Chagall his paintings are his memory. Chagall left a lasting impression on the art world. He evoked things in his paintings that were close to him and put them together in a poetic sense. He offered a dreamlike scene and influenced the Neo- Surrealists . Chagall being part of the first two phases of Surrealism (1911-1914) (1914-1918) laid a fundamental base for artist like Salvador Dali who would also rely heavily on their dreams and their images.

â€Å"But in the song there was a secret little inner song, hardly perceptible, but always there, sweet and secret and clinging, almost hiding in the counter-melody and this was the song of the pearl that might be, for every shell thrown in the basket might contain a pearl† (Steinbeck 17). This is something that might forever deceive us, because of its ‘sweet' counter-melody. This is the deception of money. It still happens today- people confuse money with power, because in some way, money can lead to power, and it's not always a good thing.Money is not the answer to everything, as it can serve to beguile people, confusing them between what they think they want, and what they really do want or need. In the book ‘The Pearl' by John Steinbeck, Kino became blinded by the outside sheen of the pearl. â€Å"The shell was partly open, for the overhang protected this ancient oyster, and in the lip-like muscle Kino saw a ghostly gleam, and then the shell closed down† (Steinbeck 18).This ‘ghostly gleam' is the power of the pearl, and it started to delude Kino little by little, starting from the point of where he had first seen the pearl to where it had cost him something very dear to him- his son, Coyotito. Kino originally saw the pearl as a practical method to improve his and his family's life, however later, he saw it only as a method of survival, and in the end, Coyotito dies because of this. Only at the end had Kino realized the power of the pearl, but this realization was of no help at the end, as everything was done. Money really is not everything, and in Kino's case, it had caused death.Take the lottery, for instance. Everyone wants to win the lottery- the chance to win it big and be rich, and not have to live tight and counting every single penny. If you hit the jackpot, you could simply live off the interest and not have to worry about a single thing. Now, applying this to ‘The Pearl,' Kino and Juana had basically nothing; t hey lived in a hut that had a dirt floor, and this hut could have been destroyed in one strong gust of wind. Their house would have been blown away, and then what? And it's not only them who live that way. Members of their entire community live just as Kino does, and they are just as content.Their village of La Paz was all pretty much dirt poor, and if even one of its members hit it big, it would represent a huge thing for their entire wellbeing. With the pearl, Kino saw not only wealth, but a healthy and prospering future, especially for Coyotito. It would have also been a big event for the entire village. The thing is, Kino only saw these things through the pearl. What does that mean? It means that he wasn't able to see a happy future for him and his family without the pearl. What does that mean? It means that without the pearl, they were still basically nothing. But Kino's face shone with prophecy. ‘My son will read and open the books, and my son will write and will know wr iting. And my son will make numbers, and these things will make us free because he will know– he will know and through him we will know'† (Steinbeck 26). ‘Through him we will know,' Kino says this, and when he says this, he means that only through Coyotito can they know. Doesn't that represent a LOT for them and the community? What if these things did not in fact come to pass? Then they would have to start over, and live with these times of incognizance playing over and over in their heads.There is a lot hanging on the pearl- it's either all or nothing. That's what the pearl seemed to represent, and in the end, they got nothing. Coyotito was a large part of their life, and what they wanted from the pearl had a lot to do with him. This time, they would have to start over without Coyotito. And also, this would especially hurt Kino. Even if nothing particularly dreadful came to pass, Kino would probably feel horrible about his ignorance and how he got his and his fam ily's hopes up- all for nothing. He would realize how the pearl had deluded him until this moment, and would live in embarrassment for the rest of his life. In the pearl he saw how they were dressed- Juana in a shawl stiff with newness and a new skirt, and from under the long skirt Kino could see that she wore shoes. It was in the pearl- the picture growing there. He himself was dressed in new white clothes, and he carried a new hat- not of straw but of fine black felt- and he too wore shoes- not sandals but shoes that laced. But Coyotito- he was the one- he wore a blue sailor suit from the United States and a little yachting cap such as Kino had seen once when a pleasure boat put into the estuary.All of these things Kino saw in the lucent pearl and he said, ‘We will have new clothes. ‘† (Steinbeck 24). These wishes are material wishes, wanting new clothes, and wanting to be married. To think, the first thing to want to do when you get rich is to get married and ge t new clothes. Doesn't that inform us, the reader, of Kino and Juana's current monetary situation? These things, wanting new clothes, wanting to get married, wanting their son to go to school.. these are all things that he would not be able to do without the pearl, and these are things that most likely all of their village people could not do.And then, near the end, Kino's instincts change rapidly from human like to animal like, living only on his instincts and guts. â€Å"Against the sky in the cave entrance Juana could see that Kino was taking off his white clothes, for dirty and ragged though they were they would show up against the dark night. His own brown skin was better protection for him† (Steinbeck 83). Camouflaging, not exactly something that we would all worry about on a daily basis. The fact that Kino takes what he wears into account against the enemy is something to think about, and it really shows how his instincts change.At this point, survival was the only thi ng he worried about. And lastly, Kino had not taken Juana's warning about the pearl earlier. Juana had seen through the pearl- it had not deceived her. â€Å"Evil faces peered from it into his eyes, and he saw the light of burning. And in the surface of the pearl he saw the frantic eyes of the man in the pool. And in the surface of the pearl he saw Coyotito lying in the little cave with the top of his head shot away. And the pearl was gly; it was gray like a malignant growth. And Kino heard the music of the pearl, distorted and insane† (Steinbeck 89).This shows that only at the end had he realized the actual appearance of the pearl. It had the power to enrich their lives and it also had the power to destroy what was important to them, and Kino had only seen the possible good outcomes of the pearl, and had hence been blinded. And by saying that he had been blinded does not mean that he had lost his sight; rather that everything else had gone over his head, or rather, in one ea r and out the other. He paid no heed to any possible bad outcomes with the pearl, and basically walked around with his eyes closed.We can all relate, but this is what the pearl had done to him, and realizing all of this at the end would not help. Coyotito had died, and there was nothing Kino could do to bring him or anything else back. His ignorance had cost him everything. The quote with which this essay had begun had basically summed up what Kino saw in this pearl- he saw a sweet outer and all of these wonderful prospects that could have come with the pearl, and also how he failed to see the potential risks. The pearl represented money and evil and greed and all of the things that people today still are oblivious to.Monetary troubles back then are still evident now, and Kino made a wrong turn that most, if not all of us had or will take some day. However, our mistakes might not cost so much as Kino's; in return for Kino's wrong turn, he lost his son, Coyotito, and instead gained a lifetime of guilt and regret. He himself changed, and not many of us would say that he changed for the better. In fact, no one can say if he changed for the worse, either. â€Å"And the music of the pearl drifted to a whisper and disappeared† (Steinbeck 90).

I now know and have gained a better understanding for how I think and feel, and how the decisions that I make on a daily basis shape my future. It is important for me to pay attention to how my actions have affected myself and those around me in that past and consider it as I move through life in the future. Over the term of my probation I have had the opportunity to reconsider many aspects of how I went about life on a daily basis prior to my offense and how those choices weren t a positive influence on myself and those around me. I have been able to use this period of time to reflect back on my choices and re-evaluate them to be successful and healthy both now and in the future. Today I have a better understanding of the nature of my offense and am grateful for those that have given me the opportunity to have this self reflection. I have
